  • Slow-growing and long-lived, generally disease- and pest-free tree. Excellent shade tree. Provides food and habitat for many forest species.  The bark develops long, flat, plate-like strips that loosen and curl away from the trunk.

  • Dry sandy or rocky soil; hardwood forest, upland slope
